22 killed in Pakistan-Afghanistan border clash

Afghanistan said on Friday that at least 15 civilians had been killed in Pakistani firing on a border crossing on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. Pakistani hospital officials say seven people have been killed in shootings in Afghanistan.

Hayatullah Hayat, the governor of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, said 15 people, including women and children, were killed when gunmen opened fire on people’s homes in the border town of Spin Boldak during the clashes. At least 60 people were also injured.

A senior official in the Pakistani border town of Chaman said the violence erupted when people waiting to cross the border into Afghanistan became impatient and attacked Pakistani installations.

People on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have been crossing the border for decades. But the two countries have recently tightened security and surveillance in the border area in the wake of accusations against each other over aiding extremists.
